The contract signed last year by Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes is expected to be restructured, in efforts to help the franchise with the salary cap. Specifically, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, the Chiefs will be converting the $21.7 million roster bonus into a signing bonus, saving KC $17 million against the cap. In July 2020, Mahomes and the Chiefs reached agreement on a 10-year contract extension, keeping the Texas Tech product at Arrowhead Stadium until 2031.
The 25-year old Mahomes has taken the NFL by storm since taking the starting job in 2018, with a league MVP that season, followed by a Super Bowl MVP in 2019, and another appearance in the Super Bowl in 2020, where the Chiefs lost to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers at Tom Brady.
Mahomes, in February, underwent toe surgery. The expectation from Chiefs officials is that he will be ready to go by the start of training camp in St. Joseph in late July.
