Patrick Mahomes and the Kansas City Chiefs managed to secure a win despite a subpar offensive performance, defeating the Jacksonville Jaguars 17-9 on Sunday.
Mahomes threw two touchdown passes, including one to returning star Travis Kelce, helping the Chiefs overcome early turnovers and penalties. The game marked Kansas City’s eighth consecutive victory against the Jaguars and prevented them from becoming the first defending Super Bowl champions to start 0-2 since 1999.
The Jaguars, who had expressed a desire for revenge after a playoff loss to the Chiefs in January, struggled in their home opener, failing to capitalize on turnovers and protect quarterback Trevor Lawrence.
Kansas City’s defense played a significant role in the win, and All-Pro defensive tackle Chris Jones made an impact in his season debut, recording 1.5 sacks.
Despite some issues with turnovers and penalties, the Chiefs outgained the Jaguars 399 to 271 in total yards, with Mahomes completing 29 of 41 passes for 305 yards.
Chiefs right tackle Jawaan Taylor had a challenging game, being penalized five times and eventually benched for a series.
Both teams had some injury concerns during the game, but many players were able to return to action.
The Chiefs will host Chicago in their next game, while the Jaguars will face Houston.
