The Kansas City Chiefs, back-to-back defending Super Bowl champions, held their 17th training camp practice on Tuesday, focusing on red zone situations and long drive drills.
Quarterback Patrick Mahomes led the first-team offense to success in the red zone, connecting with tight end Jared Wiley and wide receiver Rashee Rice for touchdowns. Mahomes also found Wiley for a two-point conversion.
Wide receiver Nikko Remigio made a notable diving catch during 7-on-7 drills, while rookie Phillip Brooks impressed with a catch during 1-on-1 drills. Running back Louis Rees-Zammit turned in a strong play with a deep catch down the sideline.
The “long drive drill” tested the offense, with the first-team completing 14 consecutive plays starting from their own 1-yard line. Wide receiver Rashee Rice stood out with multiple receptions.
Quarterback Carson Wentz and the second-team offense also impressed, with Wentz finding wide receiver Mecole Hardman for a sizable gain.
The injury report listed wide receiver Hollywood Brown (shoulder), tailback Clyde Edwards-Helaire (ill), and others as absent from practice. Defensive end BJ Thompson (Non-Football Injury/Illness) and defensive end Charles Omenihu (Physically Unable to Perform) have yet to practice in training camp.
The Chiefs will hold their 18th practice on Wednesday, open to the public with tickets available online.  Kansas City has been aiming for improvement this week, particularly in special teams coverage units, after a 26-13 loss at Jacksonville on Saturday night.
This Saturday, at 3 o’clock, the Chiefs host the Detroit Lions on KSHB Channel 41, with a warm 86 degree day being predicted at kickoff from GEHA Field at Arrowhead Stadium.  The Chiefs are 3.5 point favorites in the contest.
