The Kansas City Chiefs and Pro Bowl left tackle Orlando Brown Jr. failed to reach agreement on a long-term contract before Friday’s deadline, meaning that the franchise will place a franchise tag on the 26-year old, charged with protecting Patrick Mahomes’ blind side heading into the fall.
The Chiefs acquired Brown before the 2021 season from the Baltimore Ravens, sending package of draft picks away as General Manager Brett Veach rebuilt the offensive line, that included the drafting of center Creed Humphrey and right guard Trey Smith, both of whom became starters for the AFC West champions.
On Friday morning, Kansas City offered Brown a contract of 6 years at approximately $140 million, with $30.25 at signing, but issues involving the amount of money guaranteed in the total deal are believed to be the biggest issue that kept the sides apart in deal making efforts.
The franchise tag designation for Brown means he will be playing the 2022 season for a $16.7 million price tag when he signs the contract tender. However, Brown can, before he signs, choose to skip training camp without risking fines.
