Chiefs camp remains relatively injury free as heat cranks up in August

The Kansas City Chiefs brought pads into the equation on Monday morning, with the first padded practice since the AFC Championship Game loss to Cincinnati in January.  Four players were not on hand at Missouri Western State University, with three players on the PUP list (Rashad Fenton, Prince Tega Wanogho, and Lucas Niang) joined by tight end Jody Fortson.

Here is Chiefs head coach Andy Reid:

Reid informed the media that starting quarterback Patrick Mahomes, who briefly left practice, is “OK”.

Monday marked the first day at practice for veteran left tackle Orlando Brown Jr., who will be playing the 2022 season under the franchise tender after failing to reach agreement on a long-term contract with the Chiefs this offseason.

The Chiefs, in negotiations with Brown, made a final offer of six years and $139 million, but a lack of security with no guaranteed money after the first two years soured Brown’s side on a potential agreement.  Under the franchise tag, he will earn $16,662,000 this season, and he will not be fined for missing offseason workouts and minicamp work.

Brown was acquired from Baltimore last offseason as Kansas City remade its offensive line, including selecting two starters in the 2021 NFL Draft in center Creed Humphrey and right guard Trey Smith.
