The NASCAR season came to a dramatic close on Sunday afternoon, as Chase Elliott followed in the footsteps of his father Bill in becoming a NSCAR champion.
In action heard on Hot Country Z 101.7, Elliott would rally from a failed pre-race inspection and penalty, costing him the pole position. However, by the end of the first stage, Elliott had raced through enough traffic to get back into a place to make a title run.
Elliott, turning 25 later this month, appears to be on a similar career trajectory to Bill, who won the Cup title in 1988, and was voted NASCAR’s most popular driver 16 times, both titles now owned by Chase Elliott. The duo join Lee and Richard Petty and Ned and Dale Jarrett as the third father-son combination to win a NASCAR cup title. Hendrick Motorsports won its record 13th NASCAR championship.
Sunday’s race was the final one for 7-time Cup champion Jimmie Johnson, who finished fifth, his best result since August, riding the #48 Hendrick Chevrolet for one final weekend afternoon.
