The St. Louis Cardinals scored two runs in the top of the ninth inning, with Andrew Knizner scoring the go-ahead tally on a wild pitch, in a 4-2 victory over the rival Chicago Cubs on Sunday afternoon, pushing the Cardinals winning streak to a franchise-record 16.
The streak is the longest in Major League Baseball since Cleveland’s 22 game burst in 2017, and the best in the National League since the New York Giants, in a season that included the famous “Shot Heard ‘Round the World”, won 16 straight in 1951.
Paul Goldschmidt and Harrison Bader both homered in the win for St. Louis, as the Cardinals surge toward clinching the NL’s second wild-card continued, with the lead over the Phillies and Reds both at six games, with six games remaining.
Chicago finished its home schedule at 39-42, with the Cubs, choosing to rebuild after trading franchise staples Kris Bryant, Anthony Rizzo, and Javier Baez in July, sitting in fourth-place in the NL Central, at 67-89.
In Detroit on Sunday afternoon, Kris Bubic tossed seven shutout innings for the Kansas City Royals, in a 2-1 victory over the AL Central rival Detroit Tigers. Bubic improved to 6-6, giving up just two hits and walking one, while striking out six batters.
Scott Barlow pitched the ninth inning, earning his 16th save. Whit Merrifield had three hits, with Andrew Benintendi adding a pair of hits for Kansas City.
