John Calipari has been officially appointed as the head coach of the Arkansas men’s basketball program. The Hall of Famer’s contract spans five years with an annual salary of $7 million, a decrease from his previous $8.5 million income at Kentucky. Calipari’s deal, unveiled Wednesday, incorporates a $1 million signing bonus along with $500,000 retention bonuses annually, in addition to incentives linked to NCAA tournament performance. The contract also encompasses two automatic rollover years contingent upon NCAA tournament appearances, extending the agreement potentially to 2031.
Arkansas Athletic Director Hunter Yurachek expressed confidence in Calipari’s coaching prowess, citing his track record as a national championship-winning coach and his ability to recruit top talent. Calipari replaces Eric Musselman, who departed for USC.
Calipari’s tenure at Kentucky since 2009 saw significant success, including a national title in 2012 and multiple Final Four appearances. His departure has prompted Kentucky to initiate a search for a new men’s basketball coach, with several coaches distancing themselves from the position.
Alabama’s Nate Oats and UConn’s Dan Hurley announced their intentions to remain at their respective programs, while Chicago Bulls coach Billy Donovan stated his focus on his current role. Kentucky’s roster has undergone changes following Calipari’s exit, with notable players declaring for the NBA draft and entering the transfer portal.
