Gilman City senior Hailey Burrows had a spectacular game with 41 points, 12 rebounds, five assists, six steals and three blocks, leading the Ladyhawks over Grundy County, 63-62 in the third place game of the HDC Conference Tournament at Winston High School.
Burrows hit a three-point shot at the end of regulation to send the game to overtime, while Brooklynn McCrary hit a pair of three-point shots in the fourth quarter in the Ladyhawks late game rally. Gilman City outscored the Lady Panthers 19-10 in the fourth quarter to force overtime. Megan Cottrell scored eight points for Gilman City, while Haize Wilson and McCrary both added six.
Grundy R-5 was paced by 21 points from Morgan Axtell, with Matana Munday scoring 13 and Jandie Peterson 9.
The Winston Lady Redbirds beat the East Harrison Lady Bobcats in the girls consolation final, 37-24. Sophie Pliley led WHS with 23 points.
In the boy’s consolation final, a quickly improving Gilman City Hawks team dominated the first half against the Grundy County Panthers, leading 46-14 at the half and cruising to a 77-45 victory.
Skylar Reynolds led the Hawks with 25 points. Kaleb Bjornlie added 20 and Cornelius Peery 12 points. For the Panthers, both Bryson Gann and Wayne Baxter scored 19 points.
The final night of the HDC Tournament will find both championship games played tonight (Friday night). Action starts at 5 o’clock, as North Harrison battles East Harrison in the boys third place game. The girls championship game between Mercer and North Harrison tips off at 6:30, followed by Mercer’s boys taking on the host Winston Redbirds at 8 o’clock.
