The Trenton Bulldogs opened team tennis postseason play on Monday afternoon, improving to 13-2 this season with a 5-o shutout of the Carrollton Trojans. The action from the Bosley-Carpenter Courts at Trenton High School matched up THS, the #1 seed in Class 1, District 15, with the fourth-seeded Trojans. Carrollton ends the season at 5-10.
Two of the six scheduled singles matches were completed, as play was halted after Trenton reached the required five victories to clinch the match. At #3 singles, Maverick Sole of Trenton beat Patrick Lyon 6-1, 6-0, with Tucker Otto, at #4 singles, downing Caleb Brownley 6-3, 6-1.
The most competitive match of the semifinal battle was at #3 doubles, with Trenton’s Victor Markell and Isaac Dixon taking an 8-5 win over Jacob Lyon and Houston Varner. At #1 singles, Trenton’s Trent Villacampa and Bradyn Sager beat Corey Terryberry and Carson Fisher of Carrollton 8-0, with Trenton’s #2 doubles team of Maverick Sole and Tucker Otto shutting out Patrick Lyon and Caleb Brownley 8-0.
At Chillicothe on Tuesday afternoon, the #2 seeded Hornets beat #3 seed Richmond 5-1, sending the Hornets into the District 15 title duel at Trenton on Wednesday afternoon at 2 o’clock. Against the visiting Spartans, Chillicothe’s only setback came to singles district champion De Hesselle, who beat Josh Adams 6-3, 6-1. Jadon Collins of the Hornets took a 6-0, 6-1 win over Owens Alexander, with Gabe Peterson of CHS routing Isaacson 6-0, 6-0.
In doubles, the Hornets rolled, with Collins and Peterson defeating De Hesselle and Owens Alexander 8-0, Adams and Snider downing Isaacson and Baker 8-3, with Reeter and Savage claiming an 8-1 triumph over Burnine and Seek. The Trenton-Chillicothe winner will move into the four-team sectional and quarterfinal rounds with the winners of Districts 13, 14, and 16.
In the Class 1, District 16 final, MEC rivals Savannah and Maryville will meet at Savannah at 4 o’clock on Wednesday afternoon. In Tuesday’s semifinals, the Savages beat St. Joseph Benton 5-0 with the Spoofhounds downing Bishop LeBlond 5-0.
The Excelsior Springs Tigers will travel to Kansas City to play St. Pius X for the District 14 championship at 4 o’clock on Wednesday afternoon. In Monday’s semifinals, St. Pius downed St. Michael’s 5-0, with Excelsior Springs shutting down Odessa 5-0.
In the District 13 championship match, Warrensburg will host Higginsville on Wednesday afternoon at 4:30. Warrensburg, in Tuesday’s semifinal shutout Marshall 5-0, while the Huskers from Higginsville claimed a 5-1 victory over Boonville.
