The Class 2, District 16 championship match was played on the hardwood of the Carrollton High School gymnasium on Thursday night, with the #2 seed Trenton Lady Bulldogs challenging the top-seeded Carrollton Lady Trojans. In a highly competitive match, the home team was able to take a pair of close set wins before opening up more of a third-set advantage, winning by the score of 26-24, 25-23, 25-18.
The win sends Carrollton into the Class 2 sectionals on Saturday afternoon at West Platte High School, to play unbeaten Lawson, the champions of District 14, while Trenton, after advancing to the district championship game for the first time in program history, continues in its slow but steady effort to build its volleyball program upwards.
For THS, in the season-ending defeat, Evy McCullough had seven kills with a pair of aces, two assists, and one dig. Olivia Roberts had two kills and a dig, with Jessa Shipley adding five digs and one ace, Ava Simpson ten assists, one dig, and two aces, while Lilly Berti had a pair of kills, seven aces, and one dig.
In Weston on Saturday, two sectional matches and a state quarterfinal match will be played in the West Platte gymnasium, as, in addition to Lawson vs. Carrollton, the host West Platte Blue Jays, champions of District 15, battle Adrian. The two winners advance to the state quarterfinal round, also to be contested on Saturday afternoon.
Trenton and Carrollton advanced to the district final with a pair of straight-set victories in the Tuesday night semifinals, as Carrollton swept Brookfield out of the postseason, while Trenton, in action broadcast on KTTN FM 92.3, took down South Harrison 25-13, 25-19, 25-9.
The volleyball loss ends the fall sports season for Trenton High School girls athletics. Practice with coach Kameron Cool for the Lady Bulldog basketball team starts Monday, with the season opener against Macon to be played six days prior to Thanksgiving.
