Brown avoids surgery on injured shoulder, availability for season opener in doubt

Kansas City Chiefs Local Sports NFL

The Kansas City Chiefs have announced that wide receiver Marquise Brown, injured in Saturday night’s 26-13 loss at Jacksonville, will not need surgery on his dislocated shoulder.  The announcement came from head coach Andy Reid after Monday morning’s training camp practice in St. Joseph.

Brown suffered a sternoclavicular shoulder joint dislocation on the opening series of the game, occurring on the first play of the game.  He was hospitalized in Jacksonville for an examination, and was allowed to return to Kansas City on Saturday night.   His availability for the regular season opener against the Baltimore Ravens on Thursday, September 5th is uncertain.

The Chiefs acquired Brown, a former University of Oklahoma standout, this offseason, signing him to a one-year contract.  The team is hoping the insertion of Brown and first-round draft pick Xavier Worthy of the University of Texas will reignite a deep-passing game that has slumped since the departure of Tyreek Hill to Miami three years ago.
