The Trenton Blue Jays took the opening round of a Wednesday night doubleheader at Burleigh Grimes Field, beating the visiting Chillicothe Cardinals by a final score of 11-7.
In a high-scoring affair, Aaron Buford had the hottest bat for the Blue Jays, smacking a home run, part of a three-hit, 4 RBI game. Buford fell behind 4-1 early, but held the Cardinals at bay, allowing Trenton to rally, take the lead, and hold on for the win. From the pitching mound, Buford twirled seven innings and allowed seven runs, but only two were earned. Chillicothe had six hits off Buford, and struck out nine times.
For the Trenton offense, Hadley Williams and Bryce Long each had two hits, with Long matching Buford with four RBI’s.
Game 1 of the doubleheader was broadcast live on Hot Country Z 101.7.
In Game 2, Chillicothe got to Long early, and rolled to a 14-5 win in five innings over the ‘Jays. Long only pitched 1 2/3 innings, allowing seven runs on five hits, with a strikeout. For the Cardinals, Jordan Miller had a home run and a double, while Austin Minnick and Shayler Keller both had a pair of base knocks.
Lane Widner led the Trenton offense with two RBI’s, while Buford had two hits, in addition to Hadley Williams, who had a pair of hits and an RBI.
The split leaves Trenton 9-2 overall and a perfect 4-0 in district play. The Blue Jays won the Chillicothe Tournament last weekend, winning three games at Chillicothe’s Shaffer Park. The Blue Jays and Cardinals will rematch in a doubleheader in Chillicothe on Wednesday, June 29th at 6:00 PM.
