The Milan Wildcats beat the rival Putnam County Midgets in dramatic fashion on Friday night, with Jeremy Bennett banking in a 12-foot jumper at the regulation buzzer to give the ‘Cats a 40-38 win, in action heard on KTTN FM 92.3.
With 10 seconds remaining in the game, Putnam County had tied the contest on a three-point shot by Brayden McReynolds, with the Wildcats scrambling to get the ball up the floor in a frantic final few seconds. Tom Johnson had the play-by-play call:
The win pushes Milan’s record to 9-3 overall, and at 4-0 in GRC play, tied with Gallatin for the lead in the conference’s eastern division. Bennett had 15 points and Ahmet Niasse 10 for the Wildcats. Putnam County, falling to 8-4 overall and 2-2 in GRC play, had 11 points from Trace Riediger, with McReynolds scoring nine, and Owen Ream eight points.
The Milan Lady Wildcats won the opener of the varsity doubleheader, with a 48-38 triumph over their rivals from the north. Marian Dabney had 14 points and Emerson Pauley 10 for the Lady ‘Cats, improving to 5-6 on the season and 2-2 in the GRC. Putnam County, falling to 4-8 overall and 0-4 in conference play, had 10 points from Jenna Knowles.
