The Oakland A’s are grappling with a challenging decision in regards to their interim home stadium for the 2025 through 2027 season while a new $1.5 billion stadium is constructed in Las Vegas, Nevada. The three main options under consideration are the current Oakland Coliseum, the franchise’s home since 1968, the San Francisco Giants’ Oracle Park, or the Las Vegas Ballpark, home of the A’s Triple-A affiliate, the Las Vegas Aviators.
However, each potential location comes with its own set of questions, including facility conditions, climate, scheduling conflicts, and the need of MLB Players Association approval. The ability of the current A’s front office is also hampered due to the uncertainty around the franchise.
The A’s view Bay Area options as preferable for the interim, as it would allow them to retain contracted rights fees from NBC Sports California and delay the need to negotiate a new rights deal in an uncertain media landscape. The team received $67 million from the regional sports network (RSN) this year, exceeding their league-low player payroll of $62.2 million. To meet the RSN requirements, the A’s must play at least half of their games in Northern California.
With the current Coliseum lease set to expire after the 2024 season and the new Las Vegas ballpark not expected to open until 2028, the temporary location issue continues to pose a significant challenge for the A’s in their continuing relocation saga.
