Veteran wide receiver Randall Cobb is headed back to Wisconsin to play for the Green Bay Packers, in a move made by general manager Brian Gutekunst to attempt to earn the good graces of quarterback Aaron Rodgers.
The Houston Texans are sending Cobb to Green Bay for an undisclosed draft pick, with Gutekunst, in a rare admittance of honesty, saying that Cobb was brought back because “Aaron wanted him”. Since camp opened on Wednesday, Green Bay has brought in Cobb and offensive tackle Dennis Kelly.
Randall Cobb can thank MVP quarterback Aaron Rodgers for triggering the veteran receiver’s return to the Green Bay Packers.
Packers general manager Brian Gutekunst was straightforward Thursday in saying that the team acquired Cobb from the Houston Texans for an undisclosed draft pick because Rodgers wanted him. The Packers have added both Cobb and offensive tackle Dennis Kelly since opening training camp Wednesday.
Ending an offseason of days after days of drama, Rodgers joined the Packers for training camp this week. He had already skipped minicamp and team activities, and has since indicated he has been upset with the team not including him in decison-making moments in recent years.
What happens with Rodgers and Green Bay heading into 2022 remains a mystery, as Green Bay, in the 2020 draft, selected Utah State quarterback Jordan Love in the first round. In the 2020 regular season, Rodgers played at a level high enough to earn his third MVP award, with Green Bay making the NFC Championship Game, losing to eventual Super Bowl champion Tampa Bay.
Rodgers isn’t the only Packers star who has issues with the organization right now. Davante Adams is entering the final year of his contract and wants to be the league’s highest-paid receiver.
